Writing was crazy back in the day. An early form was called boustrophedon. It didn’t go left to right like English. Sometimes it zig-zagged like a snake. No punctuation or spaces!

If you want to learn more about the subject you should check out the book Shady Characters by Keith Houston. He goes into a lot of the beginnings of punctuation.
